The Effect of Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy on Neutrophil Chemotaxis
Although tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are common surgical procedures, the effects of these operations on the immune system have not been thoroughly determined. Our data on neutrophil chemotaxic functions in a group of 17 patients with chronic tonsillitis and adenoid hypertrophy show that chronic tonsillitis and adenoid hypertrophy impair neutrophil chemotaxic functions and that there is […]
Infratemporal hydatid cyst: Unusual location of echinococcosis
Hydatid disease is an important medical problem in countries of the temperate zones. Only occasional cases are reported in the head and neck region. An unusual location for hydatid disease in the infratemporal fossa is presented. Characteristics of this rare disease together with treatment modalities are discussed.
Pleomorphic adenoma of the septum
Pleomorphic adenoma, the most frequently seen tumour of the salivary glands, is extremely rare in the septum. In this publication a case of pleomorphic adenoma of the nasal septum is presented.
The effect of tonsillectomy on neutrophil chemotaxis in adults with chronic tonsillitis
Neutrophil random motility and chemotactic responsiveness were determined in 17 healthy adults and 19 adult patients with chronic tonsillitis before and 10 days after tonsillectomy, using a modified Boyden chamber method. The mean chemotactic index values of the healthy controls were significantly higher when compared with the chronic tonsillitis patients before tonsillectomy. The postoperative mean […]
Evaluation of leukocyte chemotactic function in patients with chronic sinusitis
In this study the chemotactic activities of neutrophils and monocytes were evaluated in patients with chronic sinusitis as compared to a control group. Leukocyte chemotaxis was measured with a micropore filter method in blood samples taken from 26 patients with chronic sinusitis and 10 volunteers. A statistically significant impairment of leukocyte chemotaxis capacity in patients […]
Unusual complication of temporomandibular joint surgery: cervicomediastinal abscess
Cervicomediastinal abscess developed in a 14-year-old girl after temporomandibular joint surgery. No such complication could be found in the literature. The complications of temporomandibular joint surgery and the possible ways this abscess may have developed are discussed.
Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the trachea Case report
Neoplasms of the trachea are rare. The fifth case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma that nearly obliterated the lumen is reported. It is one of the most frequent soft tissue sarcomas particularly in the extremities. It is very rare in the trachea. Treatment is mainly based on local resection. Postoperative radiotherapy seems of little value.
MRI of the facial nerve in idiopathic facial palsy
The purpose of this prospective study was to define the enhancement pattern of the facial nerve in idiopathic facial paralysis (Bell’s palsy) on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with routine doses of gadolinium-DTPA (0.1 mmol/kg). Using 0.5T imager, 24 patients were examined with a mean interval time of 13.7 days between the onset of symptoms and […]
Summary Background: Primary cholesteatoma of the temporal bone […]
[Primary cholesteatoma of the petrous bone apex].
BACKGROUND: Primary cholesteatoma of the temporal bone is a very rare disease. Initially, the tympanic membrane is intact, and often facial palsy may be the presenting symptom. The authors present a case of primary cholesteatoma which was surgically treated using a transmastoid-translabyrinthine approach. Other surgical approaches to the petrous apex are discussed.
Role of MRI in the diagnosis of otitic hydrocephalus
The pathogenesis of otitic hydrocephalus still remains doubtful. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated sigmoid and transverse sinus thrombosis in two consecutive patients. The role of MRI in the diagnosis and pathogenesis of this complication, together with literature findings, is discussed. Until now, lumbar puncture, which is a minimally invasive technique, was the only diagnostic measure. […]
Audiological findings in kernicteric patients
Audiological findings in kernicteric patients. Thirty patients followed up because of kernicterus sequelae and 15 normal children serving as control group were examined to determine their hearing status and evoked response audiometry (ERA) results. Seventeen out of the 30 patients (57%) had high frequency sensorineural hearing loss. Sixteen of them had bilateral hearing loss. Ten […]
MR imaging in squamous carcinoma of the head and neck with no palpable lymph nodes
To assess the efficacy of MR imaging in the detection of lymph node metastasis in patients with no palpable lymph nodes (“N0 neck”) who have squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck region. MR neck imagings in 18 patients who underwent neck dissection (bilaterally in 2) for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and […]
Effect of Intratympanic Steroid Application on the Development of Experimental Cholesteatoma
By introducing certain irritants into the middle ear it is possible to produce cholesteatoma. Propylene glycol, the main agent used for this purpose, produces a long-standing inflammation that causes hyperplasia and migration of the epithelium through an intact tympanic membrane. In the present investigation topical prednisolone was used in order to inhibit the production of […]
Myositis ossificans in the neck
Myositis ossificans is a non-neoplastic heterotopic bone formation within muscle or soft tissues. The most commonly involved muscles are the muscles of the upper arm and thigh. Occurrence in the head and neck is rarely encountered clinically. A 53-year-old Turkish man (farmer) was operated on for traumatic myositis ossificans circumscripta in his neck. During the […]
Otological findings in idiopathic hyperphosphatasia
A 17-year-old male patient was admitted because of progressive hearing loss since the age of six. His former blood and radiology investigation had revealed idiopathic hyperphosphatasia. On ENT examination bilateral thickened tympanic membranes with severe mixed-type hearing loss was diagnosed. Computerized tomography (CT) demonstrated expansion of the calvarial bones, including the temporal bones, except for […]
Transtympanic dexamethasone application in Meniere’s disease: An alternative treatment for intractable vertigo
The aetiology of Ménière’s disease still remains unknown and its therapy is therefore empirical. As a result of immunological abnormalities demonstrated, steroids are commonly used in Ménière’s disease. The place of topical steroids is still controversial. In this investigation topical dexamethasone is applied for three months through a ventilation tube in patients with intractable vertigo. […]
Aneurysmal bone cyst of the zygoma A case report and review of the literature
Aneurysmal bone cyst is a cystic vascular osseous tumor. It is rare in the craniofacial area; it is even rarer in the zygoma. A case of aneurysmal bone cyst of the zygoma was presented. Its pathogenesis, clinical and radiological features and treatment options were discussed under the view of the literature.
